ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Bangladeshโs air chiefs held detailed discussions on the potential procurement of JF-17 Thunder fighter aircraft as both sides explored ways to deepen bilateral defence cooperation, the Inter-Services Public Relations said on Tuesday. The talks took place during a visit by Bangladesh Air Force Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan to Islamabad.
According to the ISPR, the Bangladeshi air chief called on Pakistan Air Force Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu and led a high-level defence delegation during the visit. The visiting dignitary received a guard of honour, reflecting the significance of the engagement between the two air forces.
During the meeting, both sides focused on strengthening operational cooperation and institutional synergy. The discussions emphasised training, capacity building, and collaboration in aerospace advancements. The JF-17 Thunder, a multi-role fighter jointly developed by Pakistan and China, featured prominently in the talks. The aircraft has demonstrated its combat capabilities during military confrontations with India in 2019 and 2025.
PAF offers training support and fast-tracked aircraft delivery
Air Chief Marshal Sidhu briefed his Bangladeshi counterpart on recent advancements within the Pakistan Air Force. He reaffirmed Pakistanโs commitment to supporting the Bangladesh Air Force through a comprehensive training framework, ranging from basic to advanced flying courses, as well as specialised programmes at PAF institutions.
Moreover, the PAF chief assured fast-tracked delivery of Super Mushshak trainer aircraft. He also highlighted the provision of a complete training package and long-term support ecosystem to strengthen Bangladeshโs pilot training capabilities.
In response, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan praised the Pakistan Air Forceโs combat record and expressed keen interest in benefiting from its operational experience. He sought assistance in maintenance support for Bangladesh Air Forceโs aging fleet and discussed the integration of air defence radar systems to enhance air surveillance.
The ISPR said both sides held in-depth discussions on the possible acquisition of JF-17 Thunder aircraft, while the visiting delegation also toured key PAF facilities. The visit underscored the strong historical ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh and reflected a shared resolve to build a long-term strategic defence partnership.
