LAHORE: Some startling facts have surfaced about the female university student Fatima, who tried to commit suicide on Monday.
According to initial media reports, the student did not attend her class when she reached university. Meanwhile, she remained busy on her phone for almost half an hour.
Police are investigating a suspected suicide attempt after a 21-year-old female student, Fatima, was critically injured when she fell from the fourth floor of a building at the University of Lahore on Monday. Officials said the student, identified as Fatima, remains under treatment as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to police sources, investigators suspect domestic reasons may have contributed to the fall. Fatima was enrolled in the Doctor of Pharmacy programme, and the case marks the second similar incident at the university in less than two weeks, both involving students from the same department. Police said the studentโs family has not yet filed any application seeking legal action.
Meanwhile, authorities collected all available CCTV footage from the campus and began reviewing it as part of the investigation. Police sources said they would take action against the university administration if they established negligence. However, officers noted that the investigation would progress further after recording the studentโs statement once her condition allows.
Campus closure and growing safety concerns
Hospital and university officials confirmed that the student survived the fall but suffered severe injuries to her spine and lungs. She was initially shifted to the universityโs teaching hospital for emergency care and later transferred to a private hospital on Defence Road due to the seriousness of her condition. Hospital officials said she remains on a ventilator and is in critical condition.
Following the incident, the University of Lahore suspended all on-campus academic activities indefinitely, citing student safety concerns. The administration cancelled physical classes and announced that teaching would continue online. Authorities also sealed entry and exit points as panic spread across the campus.
University Registrar Ali Aslam said the studentโs condition had stabilised and that she was now out of danger. He added that Fatima was admitted to the university in September.
The incident has reignited concerns about student safety, mental health, and institutional responsibility. Students expressed fear and anger over the repeated incidents and demanded an independent inquiry, improved counselling services, and stronger preventive safety measures on campus.
