KARACHI: Security agencies have foiled a major terrorist plot in Karachi, preventing what officials described as a potentially devastating attack on the city.
According to officials, more than two tonnes of explosive material were recovered during an intelligence-based operation carried out in the Baldia Rais Goth area of Karachi. A suspected suicide bomber was arrested during the operation, while a mini truck and several gas cylinders intended for use in the planned attack were also seized.
Security sources said the terrorists were preparing to target crowded public places across Karachi, including plans for suicide bombings aimed at causing mass casualties. The explosives, along with the vehicle and gas cylinders, had been concealed inside a residential property in Baldia Rais Goth, where final preparations for the attack were reportedly underway.
Officials said security agencies had received actionable intelligence about terrorist activity in Karachi earlier this month. Acting on the information, intelligence and law enforcement agencies conducted round-the-clock surveillance for nearly a week, tracking suspicious movements and identifying potential hideouts in Karachi and surrounding areas.
According to sources, intelligence reports indicated unusual activity within a 30 to 40-kilometre radius of Karachi, prompting intensified monitoring and coordinated action. The sustained intelligence effort ultimately led to the recovery of the explosives and the arrest of the suspected suicide bomber.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the terrorists are linked to the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), specifically the Bashir Zeb faction, which officials have also referred to as Fitna-e-Hindustan. Security sources said the group has allegedly been using Afghan territory to plan and facilitate attacks targeting Karachi.
Authorities said intelligence obtained from the arrested suspect is being used to trace handlers, facilitators, and other members of the network. Further arrests are expected as investigations and operations continue.
Security officials said timely intelligence sharing and coordinated action by multiple security institutions helped avert a major terrorist incident and ensured the safety of Karachiโs residents. Investigations remain ongoing.
