Arsenal delivered a statement performance in the Premier League with a commanding 4-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium. The result strengthened the Gunnersโ title credentials and ended Villaโs impressive 11-game winning run. Elsewhere, Manchester United dropped points again, while Chelsea failed to capitalise on rivalsโ setbacks.
Arsenal Dominate Villa to Open Five-Point Lead
Arsenal avenged their recent defeat at Villa Park in emphatic fashion. The win extended their strong run of form and opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. It also highlighted the growing gap between genuine title contenders and chasing sides.
The first half was closely contested. Aston Villa showed intent and threatened through Ollie Watkins, who tested Arsenalโs defence on several occasions. However, the hosts remained composed and grew into the game as the match progressed.
The breakthrough came through a familiar Arsenal weapon. From a set-piece, Gabriel Magalhaes outmuscled goalkeeper Emi Martinez to head home. The goal marked a strong return for Gabriel, who was making his first start after recovering from a hamstring injury.
Arsenal struck again soon after. Captain Martin Odegaard threaded a precise through-ball that allowed Martin Zubimendi to finish calmly and double the lead. The second goal shifted momentum firmly in Arsenalโs favour.
The Gunners then cut loose. Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus both scored with powerful efforts from outside the penalty area. The goals underlined Arsenalโs attacking quality and control.
Watkins scored a late consolation for Villa, but the damage was done. Unai Emeryโs side slipped to third place and now sit six points behind the league leaders. Manchester City can reduce the gap to two points when they face Sunderland on January 1.
Manchester United Held as Wolves End Losing Run
Manchester United missed another chance to push into the top four after being held to a 1-1 draw by Wolves at Old Trafford. The visitors earned only their third point of the season and snapped a 12-game losing streak.
Joshua Zirkzee gave United the lead with a deflected strike. However, defensive lapses returned to haunt the hosts. Ladislav Krejci headed home the equaliser to silence the home crowd.
Ruben Amorimโs side remain sixth in the table. They are now two points outside the Champions League places and continue to struggle for consistency.
Chelsea Frustrated as Rivals Drop Points
Chelsea also failed to take advantage of results elsewhere. The Blues were held to a 2-2 draw by Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge. The result means Chelsea have won just once in their last seven league games.
Bournemouth took an early lead through David Brooks. Chelsea responded with a penalty from Cole Palmer before Enzo Fernandez scored a superb long-range effort. However, defensive weaknesses resurfaced. Justin Kluivert equalised after Chelsea failed to deal with a long throw.
Home fans voiced frustration when manager Enzo Maresca substituted Palmer just after the hour mark. Chelsea remain fifth in the table.
Mixed Fortunes Elsewhere in the League
Newcastle secured only their second away win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Burnley. Early goals from Joelinton and Yoane Wissa gave them a flying start. Burnley fought back but Bruno Guimaraes sealed the win late on.
Everton climbed into the top half of the table with a 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest. Goals from James Garner and Thierno Barry condemned Forest to another defeat. West Ham, meanwhile, dropped points after drawing 2-2 with Brighton despite leading twice.
The Premier League title race is heating up, with Arsenal setting the pace and rivals struggling to keep up.
