LAHORE: The students of private colleges and schools will receive free laptops in Punjab. Rana Sikandar Hayat, Punjab Education Minister, announced an extension in the laptop scheme to students enrolled in private educational institutions.
Under the expanded initiative, the government will distribute 10,000 laptops to eligible private-sector students. The minister said the move will promote digital access and academic equity across Punjab’s education system.
While reviewing the Education Department’s performance, Hayat declared 2025 as another year dedicated to major education initiatives. He stated that, similar to last year, the government prioritised reforms focused on transparency, access, and quality. According to him, these steps reflect the administration’s commitment to strengthening education at all levels.
Hayat revealed that authorities eliminated nearly two million ghost enrolments from public educational institutions. He added that the department addressed teacher shortages by rationalising around 26,000 teachers, which helped improve classroom management and resource distribution. Furthermore, the government introduced syllabus reforms and examination changes, while education boards shifted to an e-marking system to enhance transparency and efficiency.
Focus on early education, governance, and accountability
The education minister said the government placed strong emphasis on early childhood education by establishing Early Childhood Education rooms in 10,000 schools across the province. He added that approximately 1.1 million male and female students benefit daily from the government’s school nutrition programme, which aims to improve student health and attendance.
In addition, Hayat stated that authorities upgraded 268 schools to improve infrastructure and learning facilities. He noted that the department resolved 37 cases related to harassment of teachers, reinforcing its commitment to accountability and a safe working environment.
The minister further said the government completed the merit-based appointment process for principals in 450 colleges and vice-chancellors in 29 universities. He emphasised that these appointments strengthened governance and academic leadership in higher education institutions.
Hayat concluded that the education reforms introduced in 2025 would have long-term positive effects, as the government continues to invest in students, teachers, and institutional development across Punjab.
