LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) today predicted a chilling weather in Punjabโs hilly and plain areas, forecasting rain and snowfall until January 2.
According to PDMA Punjab, a new weather system will bring rain and snow to Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, and the Potohar region this week.
The authority said the hilly areas are likely to receive intermittent rainfall along with snowfall, particularly in Murree and surrounding high-altitude locations. Meanwhile, light rain is also expected in several central districts, including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sargodha, Khushab, Faisalabad, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Sialkot, Jhang, and Toba Tek Singh from December 31 to January 1.
PDMA officials stated that the rainfall is expected to bring temporary relief from dense fog and smog that have affected large parts of Punjab in recent weeks. The authority added that improved visibility and air quality are likely as a result of the changing weather conditions.
Safety advisories issued for residents and tourists
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathiyaa said the authority is closely monitoring the situation through its control room, which remains operational around the clock. He noted that rainfall will help reduce fog and smog levels, leading to improved air quality across the province.
The PDMA advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather, particularly in hilly regions. Tourists visiting Murree have been urged to strictly follow safety instructions and weather advisories to avoid accidents and road blockages. To assist visitors, facilitation centres have been established at multiple locations in Murree.
Drivers have been cautioned to avoid speeding and sudden braking, especially during foggy or rainy conditions. The PDMA also advised motorists to use fog lights and maintain safe distances while travelling. In case of emergencies, citizens can contact the PDMA helpline at 1129 for immediate assistance.
