The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rainfall across various parts of the country, bringing relief from cold weather and air pollution.
In Lahore, rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms is expected from December 31 to January 1. The rainfall is anticipated to reduce the cityโs high pollution levels, as Lahore currently ranks sixth globally with an Air Quality Index of 179.
Karachi is expected to experience its first winter rain on December 30, influenced by a western weather system. This will also lead to a drop in temperatures in the city.
Meanwhile, Balochistan is forecast to experience rain, windstorms, thunderstorms, and snowfall from December 29 to January 1, which is likely to cause a significant decrease in temperatures.
The PMD further reported that intermittent rain with strong winds and thunderstorms will affect several districts, including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Waziristan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Bannu, Karak, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, and Kohat between December 30 and January 1. The upper areas of these regions are likely to experience moderate to heavy snowfall, further intensifying the winter chill.
In the upper parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, water sources have frozen due to severe cold conditions. The PMD has forecast rain and light snowfall in these areas, which may help maintain local water levels but also increase challenges for transportation and daily activities.
Residents are advised to stay updated with weather warnings and take necessary precautions, particularly in areas prone to snowfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms. The rainfall is expected to bring temporary relief from smog in major cities and improve air quality while also impacting temperatures across the country.
