KARACHI: Muhajir Culture Day is being celebrated today (December 24) across Karachi and other parts of Sindh. Members of the Muhajir community are actively participating in events that highlight their cultural identity, history, and national contributions.
The day marks an annual ethnic and cultural festival observed by descendants of Muslims who migrated from different regions of India after the 1947 partition. The celebrations aim to honor their shared heritage, language, and collective struggle during migration.
As of December 24, 2025, large gatherings, rallies, and cultural programmes are taking place in major urban centers. Karachi remains the focal point of activities due to its significant Muhajir population.
Major Political and Official Events in Karachi
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan is hosting a major Muhajir Culture Day event at Jinnah Square in Malir. Party leaders and supporters have gathered in large numbers to mark the occasion.
Organisers said the event reflects unity and pride within the community. They added that cultural recognition strengthens social inclusion.
Meanwhile, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has arranged large-scale celebrations at the Governor House. These events include cultural documentaries highlighting migration history.
Fireworks displays and live performances by prominent artists are also part of the programme. Officials said the celebrations aim to bring families together in a festive environment.
Youth Rallies Highlight Community Participation
Youth organisations are playing a visible role in the celebrations. Groups such as Naujawanan-i-Muhajir have organised motorbike and car rallies across Karachi.
Traditionally, these rallies begin in areas like Karimabad. Participants then travel through major roads before reaching the Mazar-e-Quaid.
Organisers said the rallies symbolise respect for Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. They also represent loyalty to Pakistanโs founding vision.
Participants waved flags and chanted slogans promoting unity and recognition. Police remained deployed to manage traffic and ensure security.
Cultural Expression Through Dress and Literature
Muhajir Culture Day serves as a platform to display the communityโs distinct cultural identity. Participants commonly wear traditional clothing during the celebrations.
The kurta pajama and waistcoat remain the most visible symbols of Muhajir heritage. Many families encourage younger members to adopt traditional dress.
Urdu language and literature hold central importance in Muhajir culture. As a result, mushairas and literary discussions form a key part of the celebrations.ย Poets and writers recite verses focusing on migration, identity, and national unity. Organisers said these gatherings help preserve literary traditions.
Food Traditions and Family Gatherings
Traditional food also plays a major role during Muhajir Culture Day. Families prepare Mughlai and North Indian-influenced dishes at home.
Popular items include biryani, nihari, korma, and a variety of desserts. Community gatherings often feature shared meals.ย Food stalls at public events attract large crowds throughout the day. Vendors said demand increases significantly during the celebrations.ย Organisers noted that food traditions reflect the communityโs historical roots. They also strengthen family and social bonds.
Growing Recognition and Broader Message
Muhajir Culture Day gained wider public attention between 2020 and 2021. Youth-led grassroots movements played a key role in its expansion.ย Since then, participation has grown steadily each year. Social media platforms now amplify the dayโs message nationwide.
Supporters said the day promotes national harmony by recognising diversity. They described the Muhajir community as one of many cultural โflowersโ in Pakistan.ย The occasion also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the 1947 migration. Speakers emphasised resilience, struggle, and contribution to nation-building.
Organisers said Muhajir Culture Day reflects pride without division. They stressed that cultural recognition strengthens unity within Pakistanโs plural society.
