Flying home for the holidays has become easier for Apple users in the United States. Apple has expanded its Digital ID feature to include passports. As a result, iPhone and Apple Watch users can now store their passport in Apple Wallet.
According to Apple, the feature enables identity verification at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints. It works at more than 250 participating domestic airports across the country. Therefore, travelers can move through security with fewer physical documents.
However, Apple clarified an important limitation. The digital passport does not replace a physical passport. Travelers should still carry their original document at all times.
How the Digital Passport Works at Airports
At supported TSA checkpoints, passengers can present their iPhone or Apple Watch. They no longer need to pull out physical identification. Instead, they authenticate their identity using Apple Wallet.
The system works only at airports equipped with compatible TSA readers. Consequently, availability varies by location. Travelers should check airport participation before relying on the feature.
Apple emphasized that the digital passport supports identity verification only. It does not function as a travel document for international flights. Therefore, physical passports remain mandatory for border crossings.
Why Apple Added Passports to Digital ID
Apple has supported digital driver’s licenses and state IDs for several years. However, adoption has remained uneven across the United States. Some states rely on separate digital ID apps.
These state-run apps often lack integration with Apple Wallet. As a result, access differs widely between states. This inconsistency has limited nationwide usability.
By adding passports, Apple bypasses state-level restrictions. Consequently, travelers without a Real ID can still use digital identity verification. This change offers broader coverage and flexibility.
Security and Privacy Measures
Apple designed the passport feature with strict security requirements. Because passports contain sensitive data, setup includes multiple verification steps. Apple says user information remains encrypted and protected.
The company stressed that TSA receives only necessary identity details. It does not gain access to stored passport data. Therefore, Apple maintains its privacy-first approach.
How to Add a Passport to Apple Wallet
Adding a passport requires several steps. Users must follow on-screen instructions carefully. The process ensures accuracy and security.
First, users open Apple Wallet. Next, they tap the plus icon. Then, they select Driver’s License or ID Cards. After that, they tap Digital ID.
Users must photograph the passport’s photo page. They also need to scan the embedded electronic chip. This step verifies the document’s authenticity.
Additionally, users must take a live selfie. They also perform facial movements for identity confirmation. Apple uses this step to prevent fraud.
Availability and Device Requirements
The digital passport feature is currently limited to the United States. Apple has not announced international expansion timelines. Therefore, global travelers must wait.
The feature requires iOS 26.1 or later. It works on supported iPhone and Apple Watch models. Older devices may not qualify.
Despite covering over 250 airports, access remains limited. The United States has more than 5,000 public airports. Therefore, many locations still lack support.
What Comes Next for Digital ID
Apple plans to expand digital verification beyond airports. Through its Verify with Wallet API, users may confirm identity or age elsewhere. These places include businesses, bars, and event venues.
Over time, Apple expects broader adoption. If expansion continues, digital IDs may become more common. For now, the feature marks a significant step toward paperless travel.
