The Pakistan Navy’s Hangor-class submarine, named Ghazi, was successfully launched at the Shuangliu Base in Wuhan, China, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced on Wednesday.
According to the ISPR, the submarines currently under construction in China have now entered the sea trial phase, and upon completion of successful trials, they will soon be handed over to Pakistan.
Under the Pakistan-China agreement, a total of eight Hangor-class submarines are to be acquired. Four are being built in China, while the remaining four will be constructed at the Karachi Shipyard through technology transfer, enabling Pakistan to strengthen its indigenous defense capabilities. This collaboration highlights the growing strategic and technological cooperation between the two countries in the naval sector.
The ISPR noted that these modern submarines are equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, designed to effectively target distant objectives and enhance maritime defense. The Hangor-class submarines are expected to significantly bolster the operational strength and strategic deterrence of the Pakistan Navy, contributing to regional maritime security.
The launch of Ghazi marks a key milestone in Pakistan’s naval modernization program, reflecting the country’s commitment to developing advanced maritime defense capabilities. Once inducted, these submarines will play a pivotal role in safeguarding Pakistan’s maritime interests and ensuring the protection of its exclusive economic zone.
With advanced technology and sophisticated weaponry, the Hangor-class submarines represent a major leap forward for the Pakistan Navy, enhancing its ability to respond to emerging security challenges in the region.
The combination of foreign construction and domestic production underlines Pakistan’s strategic vision for self-reliance in defense manufacturing while maintaining strong international partnerships.
