Federal Minister for Power Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari announced that smart meter prices have been reduced by up to 40 percent. The reduction applies to power distribution companies across Pakistan. The initiative is expected to generate annual savings of around Rs150 billion nationwide.
The move comes as part of a broader effort to modernize Pakistan’s power sector. According to the minister, transparent and competitive procurement processes lowered costs substantially.
Cost of Smart Meters Now Comparable to Conventional Meters
The price of a three-phase smart meter dropped from approximately Rs45,000 to Rs25,000. This brings it close to the cost of conventional three-phase meters. Similarly, single-phase smart meters have been reduced by Rs7,000. These prices exclude applicable taxes.
The minister explained that efficient planning and improved regulations encouraged strong participation from international companies. Bulk procurement by all power distribution companies also helped reduce prices by lowering material and supply costs.
Benefits for Consumers and the National Grid
Smart meters provide multiple benefits to consumers and the electricity system. They eliminate incorrect readings and allow faster detection of electricity theft. They also enable prepaid billing and direct access to usage data for consumers.
Additionally, smart meters support faster power restoration without requiring a lineman. The technology improves the overall performance of the national grid while providing financial relief to electricity consumers. Lower meter prices will allow faster deployment of these benefits.
Impact on Power Sector Digitalisation
Leghari highlighted that reduced prices will accelerate digitalisation in the power sector. Introduction of competitive standards, continuous monitoring, and efficient procurement played a key role in price reductions.
The replacement of defective and outdated meters alone is expected to save Rs150 billion annually. Installation of new smart meters for fresh connections will also reduce costs reflected in demand notices for consumers.
Driving Transparency and Efficiency
Smart meters support transparent billing and operational efficiency. Their adoption is part of a broader plan to modernize Pakistan’s electricity distribution system. By reducing costs and improving accountability, smart meters encourage better management of resources.
Leghari concluded that the initiative will not only save costs but also strengthen consumer trust in the power sector. Faster implementation and wider adoption of smart meters are expected to transform electricity distribution across Pakistan.
