The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather advisory warning of snowfall, rain, and cold conditions across Pakistan until December 18.
Mountainous areas in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kohistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and parts of Balochistan are expected to face hazardous conditions.
Western winds will affect northern and western regions from December 13 to 15. These winds may increase fog, reduce visibility, and disrupt travel on major roads and highways. Authorities have cautioned that snowfall could block certain mountain routes temporarily.
Impact on Key Districts and Cities
Northern and northwestern districts will see the most severe effects. Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, and Buner are expected to experience heavy rain and snowfall. Quetta, Ziarat, and surrounding areas of Balochistan will also witness light rain and snowfall.
High-altitude regions are already facing extreme cold, with temperatures below freezing.
Skardu recorded minus six degrees Celsius, while Gupis registered minus four, Bagrot minus three, and Gilgit and Astor minus two degrees. Northern regions such as Skardu, Astor, Deosai, Kaghan Valley, Naran, and Babusar Top are expected to receive above-average snowfall.
Plains and Urban Areas Affected by Fog and Cold
The federal capital, Islamabad, is experiencing cold weather.
Dense fog is expected in the plains of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh over the next few days. Northern districts of Balochistan will face severe cold during mornings and nights, adding to travel challenges.
Authorities have urged residents and travelers to exercise caution, especially on mountainous routes. Precautionary measures are recommended for extreme cold, snow accumulation, and reduced visibility. NDMA stressed that preparedness is crucial to avoid accidents and health hazards during this period.
Safety Recommendations
-
Drivers should reduce speed and maintain safe distances on foggy or snowy roads.
-
Residents in high-altitude areas should ensure adequate heating and emergency supplies.
-
Travelers are advised to monitor local updates and avoid non-essential travel during severe weather.
The advisory highlights the importance of vigilance as Pakistan faces a spell of severe winter weather, with potential disruption to travel and daily life.
