Google has rolled out two new gesture controls for the Pixel Watch 4, expanding its hands-free functionality and making everyday interactions more seamless. The smartwatch, which already supports the “raise to talk” feature for launching the Gemini AI assistant, now adds “Wrist Turn” and “Double Pinch” to its gesture toolkit.
The “Wrist Turn” gesture allows users to dismiss notifications or incoming calls by simply rotating their wrist. Similar to the wrist-based controls on competing smartwatches, the feature is designed for moments when users are unable to physically tap the screen. Whether exercising, cooking, or carrying something, notifications can now be managed with a quick flick of the wrist.
The second gesture, “Double Pinch,” is more versatile. By tapping the index finger and thumb together, users can answer or reject calls, start or pause music, and control timers. Google says the goal is to offer fluid, one-handed control that makes the Pixel Watch 4 more accessible and efficient in everyday use.
While the new features currently remain exclusive to the Pixel Watch 4, Google has not ruled out bringing them to older models. Since “raise to talk” was eventually added to the Pixel Watch 3, there is hope that these gestures may also arrive on previous generations.
Beyond gesture upgrades, Google has improved its “smart replies” system for both Pixel Watch 3 and 4. The new version processes replies directly on the device instead of relying on cloud servers.
This shift doubles the reply speed, reduces battery consumption by about 50 percent, and enhances privacy by keeping message processing offline. Google reports that 97 percent of users in internal testing rated the updated suggestions as equal to or better than earlier versions.
The updates reflect Google’s continued effort to refine the Pixel Watch experience with faster performance, smarter features, and more intuitive controls.
