Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi has been discharged from the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) after undergoing gallbladder surgery and has been shifted back to Kot Lakhpat Jail, his lawyer Rana Mudassar confirmed on Wednesday.
Qureshi had been receiving treatment at PKLI after his health deteriorated earlier this month. He had reportedly been suffering from gallstones for nearly a year and was already on medication before his condition worsened during his imprisonment. The former foreign minister has been incarcerated in Kot Lakhpat Jail in connection with the May 9 cases.
According to his lawyer, Qureshi’s condition improved significantly following the surgical procedure. Medical staff cleared him for discharge, after which jail authorities transferred him back to Kot Lakhpat under security protocols.
Rana Mudassar added that several additional medical tests were performed during Qureshi’s stay at the hospital, and their results are expected to be available within the next 15 days.
Qureshi’s health had become a concern for PTI leaders and supporters, who had been urging authorities to provide him with immediate medical attention. His hospitalisation was considered necessary after doctors assessed that surgery could no longer be delayed due to the severity of his gallbladder complications.
Following the procedure, doctors expressed confidence in his recovery, though they recommended continued monitoring to ensure there are no post-surgical complications. Jail authorities have reportedly arranged for follow-up medical checkups while Qureshi remains in custody.
As one of PTI’s senior-most leaders, Qureshi’s health developments have been closely watched amid ongoing political tensions and legal challenges facing the party’s leadership. His return to jail marks the resumption of his confinement while medical test results and further legal proceedings are awaited.
