OnePlus has removed its AI Writer feature after global users reported that the tool blocked politically sensitive topics. The company said it is fixing a technical issue, though the move follows widespread claims of unexpected censorship in the Notes app. OnePlus confirmed that it disabled the tool to resolve what it described as technical inconsistencies. The feature lets users generate and edit text through OnePlus AI on select devices.
Reports Suggest Censorship-Like Behaviour
Throughout the week, users on Reddit, Twitter, and the official OnePlus forum said the tool refused to generate content on topics often censored in China. They reported that attempts to write about the Dalai Lama, Taiwan, or Arunachal Pradesh triggered a prompt asking them to enter something else. In some cases, generated text vanished instantly and returned an error. These reports raised concerns that censorship rules used in China had carried over into global versions of OnePlus AI.
Company Begins Internal Investigation
On Dec. 6, OnePlus said it launched an internal review and needed more time to fix the problem. A company representative said OnePlus had disabled the tool to ensure a consistent user experience while it worked on the issue. The company added that the behaviour was unintentional and reaffirmed its commitment to community-first technology. Android Authority reported that the tool remained unavailable as of Dec. 8. OnePlus has yet to provide a timeline for its return or clarify whether a specific AI model caused the problem.
Users Question Underlying Cause
Reports from users outside China suggested that the bug or filtering affected the international community. The inability to generate content on common geopolitical terms sparked deeper questions about the source of the issue. With no restoration date, creators and writers who rely on AI Writer remain without the feature.
