How the US President Trump would react to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India? Trump is tightening Modi regime for its strong connections to Russia and the current visit of Putin would further sour US-India tiest, according to analysts.
Putin arrived in India on Thursday for a two-day visit focused on strengthening defence cooperation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally received Putin at the airport and greeted him warmly on the red carpet. Both leaders then departed together in the same vehicle. The visit marks Putinโs first trip to India since the Ukraine conflict began.
Putin arrived with Defence Minister Andrei Belousov to discuss possible deals on fighter jets and air defence systems. The Russian leader expressed happiness over meeting Modi during an interview with India Today. He highlighted the vast range of bilateral cooperation, including shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, nuclear energy and space exploration. Modi also shared his excitement on social media and confirmed plans for a private dinner on Thursday evening. A formal summit will follow on Friday.
Defence Talks Take Centre Stage
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said discussions on expanding supplies of Russiaโs S-400 air defence systems will hold key importance. Indian reports indicated potential Russian offers for co-production of Su-57 fighter jets. India remains one of the worldโs largest arms importers, and Russia has traditionally served as its principal supplier. However, India has diversified procurement sources and increased domestic defence production in recent years. Russian arms supplies to India have declined significantly since 2013.
Energy Trade Under Pressure
Putinโs visit comes as India navigates rising US pressure over its reliance on discounted Russian oil. Washington argues that Indian oil purchases support Moscow during the Ukraine conflict. New Delhi has already reduced crude imports due to sanctions on major Russian producers. The Indian government fears fresh defence or energy agreements could further strain trade negotiations with the United States.
Despite this, Peskov insisted Moscow aims to expand bilateral trade without external interference. Analysts believe India may slightly reduce energy purchases under pressure but will maintain strategic ties with Russia.
Trade Imbalance Remains a Concern
A senior Indian foreign ministry official said resolving the trade imbalance remains essential. Bilateral trade reached $68.7 billion in 2024-25, but Indian exports contributed a small portion of that total.
