Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Thursday announced that the notification for Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) appointment would be issued “at any moment,” emphasizing that the process is already underway. Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Tarar sought to address speculation and clarified that all necessary steps regarding the appointment are in progress.
“It is in process and at the moment, the notification or whatever necessary steps […] will be in front of you soon. I want to urge that there should be no speculations over it […] and there’s no political disconnect on this,” the minister said.
His remarks were aimed at reassuring the public and media that the government is actively moving forward with establishing the new CDF post and that the matter is purely administrative, not political.
Following Tarar’s statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sent the summary for the appointment of General Munir as Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces to President Asif Ali Zardari for approval.
The move marks a significant step in the formalization of the CDF position, which is being established to oversee the country’s armed forces at the highest level, streamlining command and ensuring coordinated national security leadership.
The creation of the CDF post represents a landmark development in Pakistan’s military structure. By instituting this position, the government aims to strengthen national security oversight and improve the coordination between the different branches of the armed forces. The appointment of the first CDF, once formalized, is expected to have lasting implications for military administration and strategic planning in Pakistan.
Officials have emphasized that the notification process is being handled carefully and methodically, with all constitutional and legal requirements being observed.
Tarar’s assurances were intended to prevent misinformation or rumors about delays or political disagreements surrounding the appointment. The government has reiterated its commitment to completing the process promptly while maintaining transparency and adherence to established procedures.
