ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has opened the Torkham and Chaman crossings for UN humanitarian cargo. The decision followed an urgent appeal from the United Nations. The government acted on humanitarian grounds as shortages in Afghanistan intensified.
Officials confirmed that the Ministry of Commerce issued formal instructions to relevant departments. The orders were shared with Member Customs, FBR, and the Directorate General of Transit. Customs staff at Torkham have already received directives. Preparations for relief cargo movement have begun.
Phased Plan Issued for Cargo Clearance
The Ministry of Commerce directed authorities to clear UN cargo in phases. Containers carrying food items will move first. These consignments will support communities facing severe shortages. The second phase will clear containers with medicines and medical equipment. These supplies are critical for Afghanistanโs strained healthcare system.
The third phase will focus on educational and other essential humanitarian kits. These items will support students, teachers and vulnerable groups. Officials confirmed that the consignment includes 74 UNICEF containers. It also includes 67 WFP containers and two UNFPA containers. Details of additional containers will be announced soon.
Instructions Issued to FBR and Transit Authorities
The Ministry of Commerce instructed FBR and the Directorate General of Transit to ensure rapid clearance. Officials were told to expedite all procedural requirements. They must also guarantee smooth onward shipment into Afghanistan.
Authorities stressed that cargo movement will be managed in organised phases. They said the process will proceed strictly on humanitarian grounds. They also pledged safe and efficient delivery of UN supplies into Afghanistan.
