Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs, Senator Rana Sanaullah, stated on Thursday that those who โharmed Pakistan in the past may face accountabilityโ when the appropriate time comes. Speaking on Geo Newsโ morning show Geo Pakistan, Sanaullah emphasized that while accountability is important, the current focus should remain on working for the betterment of the country.
His remarks followed comments by former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif, who recently asserted that Pakistanโs challenges stemmed not only from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan but also from โthose who brought him to power.โ
Speaking to newly elected parliamentarians in Lahore, Sharif said that โlies, abuse, indecency, immorality, and chaosโ had been defeated in the recent by-elections. He added that the PTI government had brought Pakistanโs economy and diplomacy to the brink of collapse, and those responsible, including individuals who enabled Khanโs rise, should be held accountable.
Sanaullah, reflecting on the by-election victory in Haripur, expressed โjoy and surprise,โ noting the active campaigning and alleged intimidation by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister in the constituency.
He further criticized the previous governmentโs economic record, highlighting that inflation, which stood at 3% in 2017, had surged to 40% within four years, attributing the countryโs economic decline to the โlaunch of the Imran Khan project.โ
Regarding the governmentโs efforts to provide relief to citizens, Sanaullah explained that measures are constrained by the conditions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). โOnce the IMF programme is completed, we will be able to give relief to the people,โ he said.
He cautioned that continuing the politics of โabuse, false cases, and hatredโ would yield no positive outcomes. Sanaullah emphasized that the governmentโs priority remains the progress of Pakistan and ensuring that citizens experience ease in their daily lives. While accountability for past wrongs remains on the horizon, the present focus, he reiterated, must be on stabilizing and improving the nation for its people.
