ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has asked the government to clarify widespread rumours about the health of imprisoned party founder Imran Khan. The party urged authorities on Thursday to arrange an immediate meeting between Khan and his family. PTI leaders said repeated denials of family visits have raised serious concerns.
Imran’s sisters have not met him for several weeks. They staged sit-ins outside Adiala jail after officials denied them access. Rumours about Imran’s health spread rapidly on social media, with some unverified posts even claiming his death. Indian media outlets also reported on the speculation. As a result, the trend ‘Where is Imran Khan?’ gained traction on X.
PTI calls rumours dangerous and irresponsible
In a statement on X, PTI said false claims were circulating on Afghan and Indian media. It added that foreign social media accounts were also amplifying the rumours. The party stressed that these claims were “despicable” and harmful.
PTI demanded that the government and the interior ministry issue a clear rejection of the rumours. It also called for a transparent update on Imran’s health, security and current status. The party urged the state to identify those behind the false claims and present verified facts before the public. PTI warned that the nation would not tolerate uncertainty about its leader’s wellbeing.
Leaders insist government must ensure rights
PTI said the government bears full responsibility for protecting Imran’s security and constitutional rights. The party vowed to take legal and political steps to counter the rumours. PTI leader Meher Bano Qureshi also voiced concern. She said the government must issue a public statement about Imran’s condition. She added that the best way to end speculation is to allow his sisters, lawyers and party representatives to meet him.
Government responds to concerns
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif addressed another controversy on Wednesday. He commented on a video in which Imran criticised former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for seeking special facilities in jail. Asif claimed Imran enjoys several amenities in his Adiala jail cell. He said the PTI founder has a television, external food and access to exercise equipment. Asif also alleged that Imran uses a double bed with velvet bedding. He said his own jail experience offered none of these comforts.
Imran Khan has been jailed since August 2023. He is serving a sentence in a £190 million corruption case. He also faces trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act linked to the May 9 protests. PTI has repeatedly voiced concerns over the 73-year-old leader’s health.
