Key Features of the New Transparency Tool
The enhanced profile section reveals several important details: account location, username change history, platform join date, and app download source (such as US App Store or Google Play). This information empowers users to assess account authenticity before engaging with content.
Addressing Bot and Misinformation Concerns
X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, first announced the concept in October, emphasizing staff profiles would pioneer these additional disclosures. The initiative directly responds to escalating concerns about artificial intelligence-powered bots and deceptive accounts spreading misinformation across the platform.
A common deception involves profiles claiming citizenship in one country while operating from entirely different locations. When users requested mandatory location disclosure, Bier committed to implementation within 72 hours—a promise fulfilled as the feature began rolling out.
Privacy Controls and User Options
Currently, users can access their own profile’s expanded details by tapping the “Joined” date, which displays username modification frequency and timing. The feature hasn’t extended to viewing others’ profiles yet, suggesting X is allowing account holders time to review and adjust their information.
Location privacy settings offer flexibility, permitting users to display either their specific country or a broader regional designation particularly valuable for individuals in regions where free expression carries risks.
Future Development Indicators
Code analysis reveals X is testing VPN detection warnings that would alert visitors when displayed locations might be inaccurate. However, widespread activation remains unconfirmed.
