Iran Revises Its Entry Policy
Iran will end its one-way visa-free entry for Indian citizens from 22 November 2025. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has issued fresh advisories following the announcement. The ministry warned Indian citizens about potential risks linked to illegal travel schemes. Officials highlighted threats such as hijacking, job fraud and organised criminal activity. The ministry stated that Iran suspended the visa exemption to prevent misuse by criminal networks. It urged Indians to remain cautious and avoid agents offering visa-free travel or irregular transit to other countries through Iran. Officials stressed that Indian travellers must follow formal visa procedures to stay safe.
Rising Concerns Over Criminal Exploitation
Authorities noted several recent cases involving Indian citizens misled by fraudulent recruiters. Many victims were promised employment or onward travel through Iran. However, criminals reportedly kidnapped some travellers after their arrival. These incidents exploited the lenient visa-free system and exposed major security gaps. The Indian government said strict visa requirements will reduce such exploitation. The policy change aims to protect travellers and remove opportunities for traffickers who target vulnerable migrants.
Airlines and Transit Rules Updated
Under the new rules, travellers must obtain valid Iranian visas before boarding any flight to Iran. Airlines have been instructed to verify the visa status of all passengers heading to or transiting through Iranian airports. This requirement also applies to Indians travelling onward to Central Asian countries through Iranian routes. Officials believe these measures will improve oversight and reduce illegal movement across the region.

The decision represents a significant policy shift in Iran’s approach to regional tourism. Previously, Iran promoted visa-free access to strengthen ties with India and boost visitor numbers.
