Apple has officially launched its Digital ID, a new feature in Apple Wallet that allows users to create a verified identity using their U.S. passport. The feature is being rolled out in beta across major U.S. airports, signaling a potential shift from physical IDs to a digital-first identity ecosystem.
The Digital ID enables travelers to verify their identity directly through their iPhone or Apple Watch. At TSA checkpoints, users can present their credentials without handing over a physical ID. While it currently cannot replace passports for international travel, the feature offers a convenient, secure way to streamline domestic airport procedures.
How it works: Users scan their passport’s photo page and embedded chip, take a selfie for verification, and complete a brief facial movement check using the iPhone camera. Once verified, the Digital ID appears in Apple Wallet. Authentication is done through Face ID or Touch ID, eliminating the need to hand over the device.
Apple emphasizes privacy and security: all passport data is stored locally on the device, end-to-end encrypted, and Apple cannot track when or where the ID is presented. Users retain full control, approving each use via biometric authentication before any information is shared.
The beta rollout covers over 250 TSA checkpoints across the U.S., allowing domestic travelers to use Digital ID for airport security. Apple plans to expand the feature for businesses and online services, enabling users to verify their age and identity for apps, stores, and digital transactions.
This move marks a significant step toward eliminating physical documents, with the potential for biometric-based verification across multiple platforms.
