At least nine people were killed and several others injured in a powerful explosion near the New Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station in India’s capital on Monday. According to media reports, the explosion caused a massive fire that spread to vehicles parked near the metro station. Rescue officials controlled the fire after hectic efforts.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by flames and thick smoke. Visuals on local news channels showed several vehicles engulfed in fire as police and firefighters rushed to the scene.
Casualties and Emergency Response
Officials confirmed that nine bodies were recovered, while 24 injured victims were shifted to nearby hospitals. Three of the injured are in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll may increase.
Fire tenders and emergency responders were deployed immediately after the explosion, according to NDTV. Authorities have cordoned off the site and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the blast.
Media reports also claimed that explosive materials were recovered from different parts of New Delhi.
The Red Fort is a 17th-century Mughal-era fortress. It is a major tourist attraction and it is located near the blast site. After the deadly blast, New Delhi police tightened the security aross the capital.
Meanwhile, forensic experts and bomb disposal units have joined the investigation. They have collected evidence from the scene. Police urged residents to remain calm and avoid speculation and wait for the official findings.
