Elon Musk’s company xAI has launched Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia designed to rival Wikipedia. Musk has frequently accused Wikipedia of ideological bias, especially favoring left-leaning viewpoints. He claims Grokipedia aims to deliver factual content without political influence. The platform went live as version 0.1 and featured more than 885,000 articles by Monday evening. Wikipedia, by comparison, has over seven million English articles.
Musk said a major update is already in development. He promised Grokipedia version 1.0 will be “10X better” than the current release. He stated that the latest version is already “better than Wikipedia” in accuracy and neutrality.
Musk promises a focus on truth
Following the launch, Musk posted a message on X, emphasizing the mission behind the platform. “The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” he wrote. He added that while perfection is impossible, xAI will continue striving for it.
The release had initially been planned for the end of September. However, Musk delayed its launch to remove what he called “propaganda.” He said the cleanup was necessary to maintain the site’s credibility.
Criticism of Wikipedia continues
Musk has regularly attacked Wikipedia over the years. In 2024, he said the encyclopedia was “controlled by far-left activists.” He also urged people to stop donating to the site. More recently, he argued that Wikipedia is too biased to serve as a reliable source for X’s Community Notes.
Grokipedia uses artificial intelligence to generate its content. The platform relies on the Grok chatbot and xAI technology to build and update pages. One article on Grokipedia highlights Musk’s role in technology, demographics, and debates about media bias. It claims traditional outlets often criticize him with politically tilted narratives.
Wikipedia still stands by its mission
Wikipedia, founded in 2001, remains a volunteer-driven platform funded mainly through donations. It promotes a “neutral point of view” and allows users worldwide to edit articles freely.
