Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said his government will not join any EU plans to finance Ukraine’s military.
He spoke at a press conference and rejected participation in programs supporting Ukraine’s wartime spending.
Fico insisted Slovakia will not fund weapons or military efforts for Kyiv.
EU Funding Plan Called a Major Mistake
The EU plans to allocate about €140 billion to Ukraine over several years. Fico called the proposal “the EU’s biggest mistake” and warned of severe risks for Europe. His remarks highlight Slovakia’s break with EU states defending Ukraine.
Sanctions on Russia Also Criticised
Fico claimed that sanctions damage European economies more than Russia. He urged EU leaders to reconsider restrictions harming businesses and workers. He said Europe must prioritise economic interests over aggressive foreign strategies.
Hardening Position Despite NATO Membership
Slovakia belongs to NATO and the European Union. It previously gave Ukraine non-lethal support, including humanitarian supplies.
Fico’s message signals a tougher stance against military assistance and deeper involvement in the conflict.
