Milestone Move to Boost Digital Transformation in Pakistan
American tech giant Meta has officially launched the Urdu version of Meta AI for users in Pakistan, marking a major step toward inclusive digital transformation in the country. The announcement came during an event titled “Future in Focus: AI and Innovation”, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT), according to a company press release issued on Monday.
The launch is part of Meta’s broader efforts to expand AI accessibility and foster digital progress in Pakistan. The company also unveiled a series of initiatives, including an experimental programme for AI education and government digital transformation, aimed at empowering institutions and citizens through technology.
“Pakistani users will now be able to interact with Meta AI not only in English but also in Urdu,” the release stated, emphasizing the company’s focus on linguistic inclusion to make AI tools more accessible to local communities.
Speaking at the event, Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the initiative aligns with Prime Minister’s Digital Nation Vision, which seeks to empower citizens through technology. “Our partnership with Meta reflects our commitment to promoting AI education, innovation, and digital transformation in both government and educational institutions,” she said. “Introducing Urdu in Meta AI ensures that technology becomes inclusive, accessible, and empowering for all.”
AI Education and Public Sector Innovation Initiatives
Sarim Aziz, Meta’s Director of Public Policy for South and Central Asia, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s public sector and education system in adopting AI-driven solutions. “We are delighted that Meta AI is now available in Urdu, opening new opportunities for users to connect with technology in their own language,” he said.
As part of the initiative, Meta also introduced a localized edition of its guide titled “Transforming Public Sector Innovation in Asia Pacific with Llama,” developed in collaboration with Deloitte and supported by MoITT. The guide details how Meta’s open-source AI model, Llama, can improve public service delivery, enhance data sovereignty, and streamline government operations.
In addition, Meta launched an AI Literacy Programme in partnership with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), MoITT, and atomcamp. Under this programme, 350 university teachers from non-computer science disciplines will receive AI training to help prepare students for the modern digital economy.
Meta also announced the Government Digital Transformation Xperience (GDTX) 2025, a collaborative initiative designed to equip Pakistan’s public institutions with advanced technologies, best practices, and AI-driven strategies for digital governance. The program will bring together experts from both public and private sectors to share insights and strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure.
