ISLAMABAD: PM Shehbaz said that work is under on the Trans-Afghan Railway and the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Corridor. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized regional connectivity and economic cooperation during the closing session of the Regional Transport Ministers Conference 2025 in Islamabad. He said enhanced collaboration in transport and trade would revolutionize regional economic growth.
BRI and cross-border transport links
He stated that global connectivity systems are evolving. He highlighted that the Belt and Road Initiative places the region at the center of future trade. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Trans-Afghan Railway and the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Corridor. These projects seek to connect economies, expand trade, and ensure shared prosperity.
CPEC and maritime integration
The PM said Pakistan has entered the second phase of CPEC. The new phase will unlock trade routes across South and Central Asia. He noted that Gwadar’s long coastline and Karachi Port remain crucial to the Maritime Silk Road. These ports strengthen Pakistan’s role in global supply chains.
Digital economy and youth empowerment
He stressed that connectivity now includes digital integration. Pakistan invests in digital infrastructure to equip youth for the modern economy. Education and training programs align with emerging technologies to build a skilled future workforce.
Collective resolve for regional connectivity
Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan thanked participating countries for promoting regional cooperation. He said regional trade remains essential for shared prosperity. He noted that Gwadar Port holds the potential to become a major regional trade hub serving Asia and the Middle East.
Infrastructure, partnerships, and improved travel
Participants committed to closing infrastructure gaps and adopting modern financing tools. They agreed to strengthen partnerships with global institutions for transport development. They supported improved visa facilitation for logistics personnel and highlighted the benefits of the ECO Visa Sticker Scheme.
Road safety and maritime development
The conference endorsed stronger cooperation in road safety and consumer protection. It supported harmonized safety standards and advocacy for the Blue Economy in maritime transport.
