Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday announced a three-year relief initiative, the “Roshan Economy Electricity Package,” aimed at providing subsidised power to Pakistan’s industrial and agricultural sectors.
Under the new plan, both sectors will receive electricity at a reduced rate of Rs22.98 per unit—down from the current Rs34 for industries and Rs38 for agriculture. The package will be implemented from November 2025 to October 2028.
The prime minister made the announcement during a meeting with experts from the industrial and agricultural sectors, along with representatives of the business community. He assured participants that the financial cost of the subsidy would not be passed on to domestic consumers or other sectors of the economy.
Shehbaz Sharif emphasised that the initiative aims to enhance Pakistan’s regional competitiveness and promote business growth, calling it a significant step toward industrial revival and agricultural productivity. He noted that similar measures in the past had yielded positive results.
Referring to last year’s winter package, he said the two sectors collectively consumed an additional 410 gigawatts of electricity, leading to higher industrial output, increased exports, and more employment opportunities.
“The journey from economic crisis to stability was undoubtedly challenging,” the prime minister stated, “but it was made possible through the hard work of the economic team and your cooperation.”
He reiterated that strengthening the industrial and agricultural sectors was key to achieving self-reliance and freeing the country from debt dependency.
Highlighting the improvement in Pakistan’s economic indicators due to prudent government policies, Shehbaz Sharif urged continued collaboration between the public and private sectors to sustain economic momentum.
He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to creating a stable, competitive, and business-friendly environment, ensuring long-term prosperity under the “Roshan Economy” vision.
