Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced that his country possesses 5,000 Russian-made man-portable surface-to-air missiles to counter the US military presence in the Caribbean.
Missiles Deployed to Protect National Sovereignty
Speaking during a televised ceremony with top military officials on Wednesday, Maduro said the Igla-S short-range missiles form a key part of Venezuelaโs air defence system. โWe have no fewer than 5,000 in strategic air defence positions to ensure peace,โ he said. Maduro stressed that the deployment aims to safeguard Venezuelaโs sovereignty.
US Operations Near Venezuela Spark Tensions
The United States has repeatedly opposed Maduroโs government. The Trump administration earlier deployed a small naval fleet off Venezuelaโs coast, describing it as part of a counter-narcotics mission.
Caracas Rejects US Allegations
Washington claims its fighter jets destroyed several speedboats carrying narcotics from Venezuela toward the US. Caracas has rejected these accusations, calling the operations a direct violation of its sovereignty and a pretext for aggression.
Maduro Warns Against โImperialist Threatsโ
Maduro said Venezuelaโs armed forces are fully prepared to respond to โany imperialist threat.โ He added that the military stands โready to defend every inch of the homeland.โ
