Austria Sends “Clear Message” with First Deportation
Chancellor Christian Stocker confirmed that a man convicted of serious crimes was deported to Kabul on Tuesday.
He announced on X that it was the first deportation to Afghanistan since 2021.
“Zero tolerance for anyone who forfeits their right to stay by committing crimes,” he declared.
Previous Deportation to Syria Drew Global Criticism
In July, Austria became the first EU nation to deport a Syrian national since the civil war began.
Human rights groups condemned the move, arguing that conditions in Syria remain unsafe for returnees.
Austria has since maintained its stance on resuming deportations to high-risk countries, including Afghanistan.
EU Moves to Boost Returns of Afghan Asylum Seekers
Austria’s decision follows an EU-wide discussion on repatriating failed Afghan asylum seekers.
Brussels confirmed that it has initiated “exploratory contacts” with the Taliban regime.
A letter led by Belgium and signed by 20 EU member states urged the European Commission to facilitate both voluntary and forced returns.
