Gaming world mourns the loss of iconic developer Tomonobu Itagaki
Tomonobu Itagaki, the celebrated Japanese video game developer behind the “Dead or Alive” series and “Ninja Gaiden (2004)”, has passed away at the age of 58. His death was confirmed via a post on his official Facebook page, though no cause of death has been disclosed.
Itagaki led Team Ninja through its golden era
Itagaki was best known as the head of Team Ninja, where he played a central role in shaping some of the most influential action and fighting games of the early 2000s. His most famous work, the Dead or Alive franchise, debuted in 1996 and went on to include multiple sequels, spin-offs, books, and even a live-action film. The series became a global hit for its fast-paced 3D martial arts combat and visually striking characters.
He also earned critical acclaim for the 2004 reboot of Ninja Gaiden, an intense action game that became a standout title on the original Xbox. It featured challenging gameplay, cinematic storytelling, and technical mastery—hallmarks of Itagaki’s development style.
Known for his signature look and bold personality
Aside from his creative talent, Itagaki was also known for his distinct public appearance—he consistently wore sunglasses, indoors or outdoors, no matter the setting. His bold personality and outspoken interviews made him a unique figure in the industry.

Following news of his death, Team Ninja posted a heartfelt tribute on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “We express our deepest condolences… We will continue to deliver titles to many gamers, inheriting Mr. Itagaki’s creative spirit.”
Katsuhiro Harada, the developer of the Tekken series, also expressed sadness, calling Itagaki both a university senior and creative rival. “It’s hard to believe… To think that he’s gone at just 58 years old,” he wrote.
Itagaki Games marked his final chapter in gaming
After leaving Team Ninja in 2008, Itagaki launched his own studio, Itagaki Games, in 2021. While the studio has yet to release a title, fans hoped it would mark a new creative chapter for the veteran developer.
