ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will visit Egypt on Monday (October 13) to attend the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit, where a landmark peace agreement aimed at ending the humanitarian crisis in Gaza will be signed, the Foreign Office confirmed on Sunday.
The visit comes at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump. The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, along with other senior ministers.
According to the FO, the summit aims to finalize a 20-point truce agreement mediated by the United States with support from eight Muslim countries, including Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Indonesia, and Turkiye. The agreement is expected to bring an end to the two-year-long conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 67,000 Palestinians.
โThe Sharm el-Sheikh Summit is the outcome of ongoing diplomatic efforts that began on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly Session in New York last month,โ the FO said.
On September 23, PM Shehbaz participated in a high-level meeting with leaders of seven Arab-Islamic nations and U.S. President Trump in New York, where the groundwork for the peace accord was laid. A joint statement at the time welcomed the U.S. mediation efforts and reaffirmed the shared commitment to achieving a sustainable ceasefire and addressing Gazaโs critical humanitarian crisis.
The Foreign Office emphasized that PM Shehbaz’s participation underscores Pakistanโs unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, including their right to self-determination and statehood.
โPakistan hopes the summit will lead to a full Israeli withdrawal, protection of Palestinian civilians, release of prisoners, reconstruction of Gaza, and an end to displacement,โ the statement read.
Pakistan also reiterated its support for the creation of a sovereign and viable Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem) as its capital, based on pre-1967 borders and in line with UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
