A leading oncologist has urged women to raise their voices, reject stigma, and prioritise preventive care through regular mammograms and self-examinations to safeguard their health and protect future generations.
Dr Hadia Aziz, senior medical consultant and oncologist at CDA Hospital, Islamabad, delivered a powerful message on PTV News on Saturday as part of the ongoing October initiatives marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
In her televised address, Dr Aziz underscored the critical importance of early detection and awareness, calling on women to take charge of their health and not let fear or cultural stigma prevent them from seeking medical help.
She highlighted that breast cancer, when detected early, is highly treatable, and regular screenings play a decisive role in saving lives.
Dr Aziz, who has extensive experience in oncology, said that open dialogue about women’s health is key to combating breast cancer effectively. She encouraged women to recognise early warning signs such as lumps or thickening in the breast or underarm, changes in breast shape or size, nipple discharge, or dimpling of the skin.
She added that being alert to these symptoms and undergoing annual mammograms can lead to timely diagnosis and improved outcomes.
Emphasising the spirit of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr Aziz urged women to make this October a turning point by breaking the silence, spreading awareness, and committing to preventive healthcare practices. She stated that silence and hesitation have long cost women their lives, but knowledge and early action can change that trajectory.
Her message resonated with a call for collective responsibility — not only for individual health but for the wellbeing of mothers, daughters, and sisters. “By speaking up and acting early,” she concluded, “we can protect ourselves, our families, and our future generations from the devastating impact of breast cancer.”
