ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has warned motorists that driving above 150 kilometres per hour on motorways will result in First Information Report (FIR) registration. He has directed the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) to fully enforce overspeeding and axle-load regulations without exceptions.
New Speed Enforcement Measures
Chairing a review meeting on NHMP’s performance, Aleem Khan stated that vehicles exceeding 120km/h would face monetary fines. However, he stressed that any driver crossing 150km/h would face criminal proceedings. According to him, accidents must be prevented through strict enforcement, awareness campaigns, pamphlet distribution, and clear warning boards at motorway entry points.
Accountability Within Motorway Police
The minister expressed dissatisfaction with the NHMP’s performance. He ordered the immediate withdrawal of all official staff working in officers’ residences, emphasizing that police personnel must not serve as barbers, cooks, or attendants. Instead, officers should dedicate their full time and energy to public service rather than personal comfort.
Proposals for Modern Monitoring
Aleem Khan also reviewed proposals to outsource vehicle fitness inspections and introduce electronic monitoring systems like those used in developed countries. He instructed NHMP to submit actionable plans for strengthening vigilance against crimes on motorways.
He issued a one-week deadline for visible improvements in performance. The minister also warned that failure to meet standards would invite strict disciplinary measures. He stressed that only efficiency and accountability would justify incentives for Motorway Police personnel in the future.
Public Service as Core Duty
“Holding offices is not a privilege but a responsibility to serve the nation,” Abdul Aleem Khan remarked during the session. He emphasized that strict enforcement, professional integrity, and modern monitoring tools are essential to ensure safe and reliable travel on Pakistan’s motorways.
