U.S. embassies across the Gulf region and Asia have begun limiting communication and operations following a federal government shutdown. The funding lapse has added fresh uncertainty to global markets and disrupted normal embassy updates.
Embassy Statements on Social Media
The U.S. Mission to the United Arab Emirates announced via X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook that regular updates would be paused. “Due to the lapse in appropriations, this account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, except for urgent safety and security information,” the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi stated.
Similar notices have been posted by U.S. missions in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, India, and Bangladesh. The coordinated response reflects the State Department’s wider plan to manage limited resources during the shutdown.
Passport and Visa Services to Continue
Despite reduced communication, most embassies confirmed that passport and visa services would continue where local conditions allow. However, operations will depend on available resources, and some delays may occur.
Residents with consular appointments or urgent travel needs are advised to visit the official State Department website at travel.state.gov for real-time updates on embassy operations and service availability.
Safety Alerts Remain Priority
While regular social media updates are suspended, embassies clarified that urgent safety and security information will continue to be shared. Officials urged residents and travelers to rely on official platforms for critical advisories during the shutdown period.
