The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high alert, warning of heavy rains and thunderstorms across the province from October 5 to 7. The advisory highlights risks of flash floods, urging citizens to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines.
Intense Weather Expected Across Punjab
According to the PDMA, several districts in upper Punjab will experience intense downpours during the forecast period. Rainfall is also expected over the upper catchment areas of major rivers, raising concerns about water flow and potential flooding.
Commissioners and deputy commissioners in all districts have been directed to remain on high alert. The PDMA emphasized that administrations are already mobilized under the instructions of the Punjab chief minister.
Risk of Flooding in Rivers and Tributaries
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia stated that the upcoming rains may significantly increase water levels in rivers and adjoining tributaries. He instructed all deputy commissioners and field officers to stay present in their respective areas and closely monitor the evolving situation.
This proactive monitoring aims to minimize risks to lives and property, particularly in vulnerable riverine areas.
Departments on Emergency Readiness
To ensure effective disaster management, the PDMA has also alerted health, irrigation, communications, local government, works, and livestock departments. These departments have been tasked with taking precautionary measures and ensuring rapid response if conditions worsen.
The integrated effort highlights Punjab’s preparedness to handle any emergency situation arising from the predicted storms.
Safety Guidelines for Citizens
Citizens have been strongly urged to follow precautionary measures during this period of unstable weather. The PDMA advised people to stay at safe locations during thunderstorms, avoid unnecessary travel, and not remain in open areas when lightning strikes or storms intensify.
In case of emergencies, residents are encouraged to call the PDMA helpline 1129 for immediate assistance.
Preparing for Storms: Community Awareness
The weather alert underlines the importance of community awareness and preparedness. By staying updated on official advisories and avoiding risky behavior, citizens can play a crucial role in ensuring their own safety as well as protecting their communities.
