Extortion Demand and Threats to Life
In Karachi, a serious extortion case has been filed against individuals who allegedly targeted Zafar Abbas, head of Jaffaria Disaster Management Cell (JDC). The case was registered at Tipu Sultan Police Station after reports of a substantial ransom demand and threats to Abbas’s life. Authorities say the demand was for Rs 140 million monthly, and failure to comply would result in deadly consequences.
According to the FIR, the incident occurred on September 25. Abbas was in an office with Daniyal Haider, who lodged the complaint. Abbas received a call on his personal phone from an anonymous caller ordering him to meet at a private hotel on Shahrah‑e‑Faisal at 3 PM. When Abbas complied, three individuals identified as Mahmood Akhtar, Mohsin Wasti, Yawar Sai, and Manzar Kazmi were present. They communicated the ransom demand and threats. Following this, the case was transferred to the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) for a more thorough investigation. Police have confirmed that raids are ongoing to apprehend the suspects.
Community Alarm and Call for Government Action
News of the threats against a prominent social figure has sent shockwaves through Karachi’s civil society. Supporters and residents are now demanding immediate and strong government action to ensure his safety. Many have voiced concern that if such threats go unchecked, it could embolden more extortionists.
Zafar Abbas, already known for humanitarian work through the JDC Foundation, is widely respected across Karachi. The community expects authorities to act not only to protect him, but also to send a message that extortion and threats will not be tolerated.
The family of Zafar Abbas and his associates have also expressed anxiety for his security. Officials are being urged to tighten security measures, monitor suspects closely, and ensure the legal system works swiftly to bring those responsible to justice.
