Lavrov Condemns Western Rhetoric and Airspace Violations
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov issued a stern warning to NATO and EU nations during his address to the UN General Assembly. He said any aggression toward Russia would trigger a “decisive response.” His remarks followed rising tensions after Estonia reported Russian jet incursions and NATO forces shot down drones over Poland.
Lavrov condemned US President Donald Trump’s recent support for downing Russian jets that enter NATO airspace. He warned that any attempt to target Russian aircraft in its own airspace would be met with regret and serious consequences. He stressed that Russia has not attacked NATO or EU countries and has no plans to do so.
Concerns Over Venezuela and Hopes for Dialogue with the US
Lavrov also raised concerns over a US military build-up near Venezuela, calling it alarming. He hinted that some countries may misuse a UN Security Council resolution on Haiti to justify military action in Venezuela. While not naming the US directly, Lavrov questioned the motives behind increasing naval deployments in the region.
Despite sharp criticism, Lavrov expressed willingness to engage in direct dialogue with the United States. He confirmed that a third round of talks on embassy operations is being planned. A meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also held on the sidelines of the UN summit.
Lavrov dismissed Trump’s claims that Ukraine could regain all lost territory. He called such expectations “politically blind” and said Moscow had no intention of returning to pre-2022 borders.
Germany was also criticised for what Lavrov called “militaristic rhetoric,” and he warned against discussions of a potential World War III scenario.
