The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the USA’s membership with immediate effect. The ICC Board announced the decision after a year-long review and extensive consultations with stakeholders. The suspension was based on repeated breaches of obligations under the ICC Constitution.
Governance and compliance issues
According to the ICC, USA Cricket failed to establish a functional governance structure. It also made little progress toward National Governing Body recognition with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC). Moreover, USA Cricket engaged in actions that damaged the sport’s reputation both domestically and internationally.

“The suspension is an unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long-term interests of the game,” the ICC stated. The Board stressed that while membership rights are suspended, USA national teams will remain eligible to participate in ICC events. This includes ongoing preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).
Oversight and continuity measures
To ensure continuity, the ICC and its designated representatives will temporarily manage the administration of USA national teams. This arrangement seeks to support players, preserve Olympic momentum, and maintain the High-Performance and Player Development Program. The program is designed to enhance the skills and competitiveness of USA cricketers.
Path to reinstatement
The ICC’s Normalisation Committee, supported by ICC management, will outline clear steps for USA Cricket to regain membership rights. These measures will require visible improvements in governance, operations, and organizational functionality. The committee will closely monitor progress while providing ongoing consultative support.
Background to the suspension
USA Cricket had already been placed “on notice” at the 2024 ICC Annual General Meeting for failing to meet membership criteria. At that time, the Board granted a 12-month period to address deficiencies. Despite assurances made as recently as July 2025, persistent non-compliance forced the ICC to impose suspension.

The ICC reaffirmed its commitment to expanding cricket in the United States. It stressed the importance of safeguarding athletes, protecting cricket’s Olympic inclusion, and strengthening the wider cricket ecosystem.
