The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced the addition of two new routes to Islamabad’s electric bus service. The move aims to improve urban mobility, enhance passenger convenience, and reduce traffic congestion in the federal capital.
According to officials, one new route will run from G-9 Karachi Company to Faizabad, while the second will connect Nilor to Khannapul. These additions will strengthen the network of 20 existing routes already being served by electric buses across Islamabad.
Growing Network and Ridership
At present, around 120 electric buses operate daily in the city, transporting nearly 60,000 passengers. The service has received a positive response from commuters who appreciate the affordability and environmental benefits of electric transportation.
Once upgrades to bus depots are completed, the full fleet of 170 buses will be deployed. This expansion is expected to push daily ridership beyond 100,000 passengers, making the service a backbone of Islamabad’s public transport network.
Passenger Concerns and Digital Tracking
Despite strong public acceptance, passengers have expressed concerns about bus tracking. Unlike international public transport systems, the existing CDA mobile app does not display estimated arrival times.
To address this, officials confirmed that a request has been made to Google for integration of real-time schedules. Once this feature is live, citizens will be able to track buses accurately, improving travel planning and reducing waiting times.
Information Access for Commuters
Authorities have also recommended additional steps to assist commuters. These include:
-
Providing printed booklets with route details at airports, railway stations, bus stops, and shopping malls.
-
Installing digital and printed information boards at bus stops for easy navigation.
Such initiatives are designed to make the electric bus service more user-friendly, especially for first-time passengers and tourists.
A Step Toward Sustainable Transport
The introduction of new routes reflects Islamabad’s broader commitment to sustainable urban mobility. By replacing conventional fuel-based transport with electric buses, the city not only cuts carbon emissions but also promotes cleaner air and improved quality of life for residents.
As Islamabad continues to expand its transport infrastructure, the electric bus project stands as a model for eco-friendly urban development in Pakistan. With more routes on the horizon, CDA’s initiative could set the foundation for a modern, accessible, and sustainable public transport system nationwide.
