After a cinematic journey spanning more than three decades, Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan has finally won his first-ever National Film Award, a moment fans and critics alike have long awaited.
The 71st National Film Awards ceremony, held in New Delhi, saw President Draupadi Murmu present the honours to the winners, marking a historic milestone in Khan’s illustrious career.
Shah Rukh Khan, often hailed as the “King of Bollywood,” received the Best Actor Award for his dynamic and versatile performance in Jawan (2023). The film allowed him to display unmatched versatility, playing a double role and appearing in seven different avatars.
With its strong critical reception and massive audience appeal, Jawan stood out as one of the defining films of 2023, cementing Khan’s stature as a powerhouse performer.
The Best Actor Award was shared with Vikrant Massey, who received equal acclaim for his deeply moving performance in 12th Fail, a story of perseverance and grit. Actress Rani Mukerji also shone at the ceremony, winning Best Actress for her heartfelt role in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway.
For Shah Rukh Khan, who made his film debut in 1992 with Deewana, this award is particularly meaningful. Despite being one of the most celebrated actors in Indian and global cinema, with classics like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Chak De! India, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to his name, he had never secured a National Film Award—until now.
The honour not only recognizes Khan’s brilliant turn in Jawan but also celebrates his decades of contribution to Indian cinema. For his fans, the moment resonates as the culmination of a 33-year wait, while for Shah Rukh Khan himself, it stands as a dream fulfilled and a crowning jewel in his legendary career.
