Sindh to distribute free Pink Scooters to women in Karachi this week to improve safe mobility and support gender-inclusive transport access.
Major boost for women’s mobility in Karachi
The Government of Sindh has officially announced the distribution of free Pink Scooters for women in Karachi this week. Sindh’s Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, made the announcement on Tuesday during his visit to inspect progress on the Yellow Line BRT project.
The initiative aims to empower women through improved transport access. These scooters are part of a broader plan to make public and private transport safer and more accessible for women. The program, backed by the World Bank, reflects the government’s commitment to gender equality in urban mobility.
Memon confirmed that all scooters will be distributed free of cost and are designed specifically for female riders. The Pink Scooter program is expected to reduce daily travel challenges faced by working women and students in the city.
Transport upgrades underway across Karachi
During his briefing, the minister highlighted ongoing efforts to modernize Karachi’s public transport system. He stated that construction of depots and infrastructure for the Yellow Line BRT is progressing steadily. The Senator Taj Haider Bridge, a key part of the network, is nearly complete and expected to open within a week.
In addition to the Pink Scooters, double-decker and electric buses will soon arrive in Karachi. These buses aim to improve commute efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
Memon also shared that President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent visit to China included high-level talks about establishing bus manufacturing plants in Sindh. This development will not only boost local transport but also generate employment opportunities across the province.
Delays in some projects due to utility transfers are being addressed, with all efforts focused on fast-tracking pending work.
