Historic Diplomatic Step
Portugal officially recognised the State of Palestine on Sunday. Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel announced the decision in New York. He made the declaration at Portugal’s Permanent Mission, according to broadcaster RTP.
Call for Peace and Ceasefire
Rangel urged the release of all hostages and an immediate end to hostilities. He also stressed the need for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza. His remarks highlighted Portugal’s commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East.
Backed by National Leadership
The foreign minister confirmed the recognition followed the Council of Ministers’ approval on 18 September. The decision came after wide-ranging consultations. Both the president and a large majority of parliamentary parties supported the move. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had earlier expressed full backing for the recognition.
International Momentum Builds
Portugal’s announcement came only hours after the UK, Canada, and Australia recognised Palestine. Their coordinated moves took place ahead of the UN General Assembly. Additionally, France, Luxembourg, and Malta announced plans to take similar steps during the assembly next week.
Strengthening Global Support
This growing list of recognitions signals increasing international pressure to revive the peace process. By aligning with several Western allies, Portugal reinforced its diplomatic stance on resolving the conflict through dialogue and recognition of Palestinian statehood.
