The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has initiated a large-scale crackdown on wealthy individuals flaunting their lavish lifestyles on social media platforms.
Authorities have collected extensive data on around 100,000 people showcasing luxury homes, flashy cars, expensive jewellery, and extravagant weddings. Officials have warned that those who fail to update their tax returns in line with their visible lifestyle will face strict legal action.
FBR officials explained that individuals posting videos and photos of luxury possessions are under close observation. Images of big bungalows, high-end vehicles, and costly jewellery are being compared with declared sources of income.
In some cases, individuals have been spotted wearing suits worth $20,000 at weddings, raising concerns over undeclared wealth. Such displays of affluence, the FBR stressed, must match what is reported in income tax filings.
The tax authority’s dedicated social media monitoring team has compiled information on about 100,000 suspected individuals whose lifestyles appear disproportionate to their reported earnings.
Nearly 80% of last year’s tax returns will be audited as part of this operation. Those found concealing assets, wealth, or income will be required to explain their financial sources. Officials warned that failure to disclose an increase in annual income could lead to serious consequences.
Special attention is being given to weddings, where extravagant spending on designer clothing, luxury jewellery, and grand displays of wealth is common. Authorities have made it clear that such expenses must be reflected in updated tax filings.
FBR emphasized that individuals who provide accurate and updated income details will not be penalized. However, those who fail to disclose their assets or lavish spending risk facing audits, fines, and legal action. Citizens have been urged to update their returns promptly to avoid complications with tax authorities.
