The European Union (EU) has appointed Raimundas Karoblis as its new ambassador to Pakistan, succeeding Dr Riina Kionka. According to the Foreign Office, Karoblis presented his credentials to President Asif Ali Zardari on September 10.
Extensive Diplomatic Background
Karoblis brings over 30 years of experience in diplomacy, international trade, and security. From 2022 to 2025, he served as the EU Ambassador to Tajikistan. Prior to that, he held several senior positions in Lithuania’s diplomatic service, including Deputy Minister responsible for EU affairs, foreign trade, and sanctions. He also served as Lithuania’s Permanent Representative to the European Union between 2010 and 2015.
Leadership in Defence and Governance
Beyond his diplomatic career, Karoblis held the post of Lithuania’s Minister of National Defence from 2016 to 2020, contributing to key defence and security initiatives. His wide-ranging experience highlights his ability to navigate both international diplomacy and national governance.
Personal Profile
Karoblis holds a law degree from Vilnius University. Fluent in Lithuanian and English, he also speaks French and Russian. Outside of his professional commitments, he enjoys cycling, hiking, and cultural activities.
EU-Pakistan Partnership
The EU remains Pakistan’s second-largest trading partner. Under the GSP+ status, Pakistan benefits from duty-free or reduced-duty access to European markets. Strengthening trade and diplomatic ties will likely remain central to Karoblis’s agenda as he takes on his new role.
