Rear Admiral (retd) Fawad Amin Baig reveals findings on Navy Day: Joint survey confirms Pakistan’s seabed holds major gas deposits
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Navy, in collaboration with China, has detected vast gas reserves deep beneath the sea. The discovery came during a joint survey initiated under the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff. Rear Admiral (retd) Fawad Amin Baig disclosed the findings on Monday while speaking on the Geo News program “Capital Talk” with the host Hamid Mir.
The announcement coincided with Pakistan Navy Day, observed on September 8 to honour the defenders of the nation’s seas. Rear Admiral Baig highlighted that the country’s waters are rich in minerals and marine resources. He stated that if managed properly, these reserves could reshape Pakistan’s economic future.
Pakistan Navy’s Role in Exploration
Rear Admiral Baig emphasized that the Pakistan Navy played a central role in exploring and identifying these deep-sea reserves. He confirmed that a detailed survey, conducted with Chinese assistance, validated the existence of significant gas deposits on Pakistan’s seabed.
Call for Investment and Technology
However, he stressed that the next crucial step is attracting investors. With the right technology and funding, the hidden wealth could support Pakistan’s long-term development. Baig warned that hostile fifth-generation warfare tactics often discourage investors whenever Pakistan moves towards progress.
New Strategy and Cooperation with China
Despite challenges, Baig expressed confidence in ongoing efforts under the Special Investment Facilitation Council. He noted that the combined support of military and political leadership has introduced a new defence strategy aimed at strengthening the economy.
Moreover, Pakistan and China are working to deepen mining and energy cooperation. A joint statement last year confirmed plans to boost collaboration in offshore oil, gas, and natural gas hydrates. Chinese firms are encouraged to invest in Pakistan’s offshore oil and gas blocks, ensuring long-term energy development.
