A Historic Appointment in U.S. Military Leadership
DUBAI – In a groundbreaking development for diversity and representation in the United States military, Brigadier General Shariful M Khan, a Bangladeshi-born Muslim, has been named Director of Staff for the Pentagon’s Golden Dome initiative — a cutting-edge missile defence program widely regarded as America’s equivalent of Israel’s Iron Dome. This appointment marks a historic milestone, as a Muslim officer will now spearhead one of the U.S. Department of Defense’s most classified and strategic defence efforts.
Brig Gen Khan’s role will encompass oversight of strategy formulation, policy development, and critical collaboration with defence contractors, research institutions, national laboratories, and governmental agencies. The Golden Dome initiative is designed to counter evolving aerial threats, including ballistic and cruise missiles, by creating an integrated next-generation missile defence shield to protect the United States and its allies.
His appointment not only underscores his technical and leadership expertise but also reflects the growing commitment within the U.S. military to embrace diversity at the highest levels of command. For Muslim and immigrant communities across the U.S., Khan’s elevation stands as a powerful symbol of inclusion and opportunity in national service.
