A major flood wave is expected to reach Guddu Barrage today (Sunday), raising serious concerns about flooding in the riverine, or katcha, areas of Sindh. Authorities in Sehwan have begun making announcements urging residents living along the river belt to evacuate immediately to safer locations.
Sindh Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla confirmed that all necessary arrangements have been made to handle the approaching flood wave. Similarly, Sindh Assembly Speaker Syed Owais Qadir Shah, during a visit to the Sukkur Barrage, stated that the situation would become clearer once the floodwaters reach Panjnad and Guddu Barrages.
Irrigation officials have been working to reinforce vulnerable points along protective embankments, and they confirmed that the Sukkur Barrage is not under any immediate threat.
In Punjab, water pressure remained high on the Shershah Flood Embankment in Multan, while a high-level flood persisted at Head Trimmu in Jhang. Floodwaters entering Sindh from Punjab on Saturday have already caused the Indus River’s water levels to rise, triggering fears of widespread flooding across the province.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the provincial government remains fully alert and ready to respond.
To mitigate risks, authorities have relocated 121,769 people from katcha areas to safer locations, with 5,848 receiving medical attention in the past 24 hours. In total, 360,777 people have been moved due to flood threats.
Rescue teams, health camps, and relief supplies have been deployed across affected districts, and 22 boats are on standby to assist in evacuation and rescue operations.
The government continues to closely monitor the situation and coordinate with local authorities to ensure the safety of residents as the flood wave approaches Guddu Barrage, emphasizing preparedness and rapid response to minimize the potential impact of the disaster.
