Lionel Messi has cast doubt on his participation in the 2026 World Cup following his brace in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Venezuela in the penultimate round of the South American qualifiers.
Despite scoring twice and helping secure Argentina’s early qualification, the 38-year-old captain expressed caution regarding his involvement in next year’s tournament, citing recent injuries and his absence from several matches with MLS side Inter Miami.
Speaking to reporters at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium after the match, Messi reflected on the challenges posed by his age. “In the past, I said it, logically, it was unlikely I’d play in a World Cup at 39. It’s nine months away, which is close, but it’s a long time as well,” he explained.
The football superstar emphasized his love for the game but acknowledged that his playing career is approaching its natural conclusion. “I love this, I love playing and I never want it to end, but the moment is coming, I am aware, it will happen when it has to happen.”
Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has already decided to rest Messi and exclude him from the national team’s final qualifying match against Ecuador in Guayaquil on Tuesday, highlighting concerns over the star’s fitness.
Messi reiterated that he will base his decision on how he feels physically, noting, “When I feel good, I enjoy myself. And if I’m not feeling well, I really struggle, I’d rather not be playing, so we’ll see.”
The Inter Miami captain again emphasized that, considering his age, it seems unlikely he will feature in the 2026 World Cup. Nonetheless, he remains motivated and excited at the possibility, taking a day-by-day approach.
“Same as I said before about the World Cup that I don’t think I’ll play another. Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it. But well, we’re almost there, so I’m excited and motivated to play it. Like I always say, I go day by day, going by how I feel.”
Messi’s statements leave fans wondering if the football legend will once again take the global stage or bow out gracefully, concluding a storied World Cup career.
